The start of the Queens of England

Today marks the anniversary of one of the most momentous events in English history.  It changed the country forever and now, 950 years on, it still influences every day life through the legacy it left.  The Battle of Hastings was more than a military victory for William the Conqueror.  The administration system he put in place and his total Norman conquest of the country (well, major parts of it at least) turned it from a sleepy backwater only just recovering from the Viking invasions of the 10th and 11th centuries into a major player on the European stage.  His reign is taken as the start of modern England and the start of the modern English monarchy.  And for that reason, today is the start of the line of modern Queens of England.  From William's Matilda to William's Kate in waiting to be queen, today is the day it all started.
