Carl Gustaf and Silvia in Bhutan

The King and Queen of Sweden with the King and Queen of Bhutan on day one of the State Visit

It's an historic trip, the first time that a King and Queen of Sweden have made a State Visit to Bhutan. Carl XVI Gustaf and Silvia will spend three days in the mountain kingdom and they were made to feel very welcome indeed.

There was huge excitement ahead of the visit with rice decorations made on the route the royal couple would take, flags and flowers and photographs of the visitors.

The King and Queen of Sweden touched down at Paros International Airport to a big turnout and an official royal welcome.

Later there was a traditional procession, a chipdril, with Carl XVI Gustaf and Silvia taking part as they made their way through the ancient streets accompanied by music.  After the recent visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge there was an air of familiarity about the whole thing.  Silvia chose a pale lemon two piece suit with her long skirt in the style of Bhutanese traditional dress.

The royal couple then had their first meeting on this visit with King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Queen Jetsun Pema before heading off for a meeting with the Prime Minster of Bhutan, Thsering Tobgay. In the evening there was a State Dinner. The King and Queen of Sweden are in Bhutan from June 8th until June 11th for this historic State Visit which will focus on strengthening the political, economic and cultural ties between the two countries.
