What Kate wears for Trooping the Colour

OK, we're all more interested in whether Princess Charlotte makes her balcony debut this time round but when Trooping the Colour unfolds in all its spectacular this Saturday, there will be a lot of focus on what the Duchess of Cambridge is wearing. This will be the sixth time Kate has taken part in the famous royal event and up until now there's been a lot of pastel on show. Here's a look back at the five outfits Kate has worn for Trooping the Colour.

For her first appearance as a royal duchess at Trooping the Colour in 2011, Kate chose a cream double breasted coat with peplum detail and a black straw hat. The colour combo is a bit odd for the start of June but this was when Kate was a newlywed and could do no wrong. The very sight of her on the balcony at Buckingham Palace caused a minor sensation and the Alexander McQueen coat is very stylish indeed. Overall, a winning start for a duchess.

The following year, Diamond Jubilee year, saw Kate go for pale again. The Duchess of Cambridge chose an Erdem dress in a grey kind of ice blue. It had a rolled neckline, long sleeves and embroidered flowers and while it is rather pretty, it's also - dare we say it - ever so slightly old fashioned? The Jane Corbett hat looked great and Kate showed her sense of savvy for royal events as this works perfectly in head and shoulder photos which is what Trooping the Colour is all about.

If you're going to turn up to your last big royal event before having your first baby in palest pink then don't be surprised if we all think a princess is on the way. Kate quite possibly knew the total frenzy that her choice of light rose for Trooping the Colour in 2013 would cause and the outfit, by Alexander McQueen (again) with a hat by Jane Corbett (again) helped fuel royal baby mania even more. The Cambridge addition was of course, a son, and the pink outfit remains possibly Kate's most famous Trooping one.

In 2014, it was back to blue for Kate. The Duchess of Cambridge chose an icy two piece suit from her go to Trooping designer, Alexander McQueen, with a hat by Jane Taylor. This sharp, chic look is for me the best of Kate's choices for this annual event. The colour, the cut and the overall look are pretty much perfect.  Marvellous.

Kate showed what a trooper she was when she attended Trooping the Colour in 2015 just weeks after the birth of Princess Charlotte. Leaving her seven week old for just a few hours to cope with a two year old making a balcony debut, Kate went for a blue Catherine Walker coat with white hat which showed just how well she looked so soon after becoming a mum for the second time. So there is a pattern here which might just predict what Kate will wear this year - she favours McQueen, blue and pale hats. Watch this space as Trooping the Colour 2016 approaches.
