It's not actually a royal wedding but in the absence of Harry saying 'I do' anytime soon, this will have to do. Pippa Middleton, younger sister of the Duchess of Cambridge, is marrying her boyfriend, James Matthews. And she's got a king of a diamond to prove it.

The engagement was confirmed this morning after the Daily Mail ran an exclusive on the impending wedding in its July 19th edition. And while there was no joint appearance, as yet, from the couple for the photographers, Pippa stepped out on the hottest day of the year so far wearing a diamond that would burn a hole in anyone's pocket and then some.

Pippa Middleton has been dating hedge fund manager, James Matthews, for just under a year and the Daily Mail reports that they got engaged in the Lake District last week during a romantic break. The paper says that Mr Matthews asked Pippa's father, Michael Middleton, for her hand in marriage. An official announcement just after lunchtime on July 19th confirmed that the couple became engaged on July 17th and the wedding will take place next year.

Whether the marriage will include prominent roles for the Duchess of Cambridge and her children remains to be seen. As sister of the bride, Kate will be a star of the show but given that Pippa famously acted as chief bridesmaid at the Royal Wedding of 2011 we might yet see the duchess repay the honour and do the honours as maid of honour. And a summer wedding next year would mean that agewise, things might just be perfect for Kate and William's children to be bridesmaid and pageboy - George would be four and Charlotte would be two.

Pippa, 32, and James Matthews, 40, were seen together at Wimbledon this month but the bride to be's most recent appearance as at the Frost summer party where she carefully kept her left hand out of view for most of the evening.

This morning, there was no hiding as the sparkler wowed in the sunshine. Pippa Middleton spent the night before her big announcement partying with Princess Eugenie and just about the only way her wedding is going to be trumped now is if one of the York girls or Prince Harry makes a marriage announcement. Stand by, it might not be a royal wedding but it's going to be a very, very big event as Kate becomes sister of the bride.
