It's King's Day in Belgium but it was one of the country's two queens who led the way. Paola, consort of Albert II, was with her family at the traditional events and she was every inch the leading lady.

November 15th is the name day of Leopold I, chosen as King of the Belgians in 1831 and of Albert II so it was only to be expected that the man who ruled Belgium from 1993 until 2013 was present. He and Paola led the Belgian Royal Family, beginning with attendance at the traditional Te Deum service held every year at the start of the festivities.

They were joined there by their only daughter, Princess Astrid and their younger son, Prince Laurent, as well as Astrid's husband, Prince Lorenz.

King's Day has been celebrated in Belgium since 1866 but in 2001, the Federal Government added a ceremony honouring the monarch and Albert, Paola and their family were all present for the event.

King Philippe of the Belgians was at Al Azraq Air Base where he met King Abdullah II of Jordan. In a few days' time he and Queen Mathilde will head to see their neighbours, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima, as they pay a State Visit to the Netherlands. In the meantime, the royal spotlight is firmly on Philippe's father and mother as Paola led the way.
