Royal Palaces in the Snow: the Royal Palace, Oslo

A carpet of snow leads to the Royal Palace in Oslo

Royal palaces decked in snow don't have to be confined to regal Christmas cards. Throughout December, a different stately building with royal links will help countdown to Christmas Day. Today, it's the Royal Palace in Oslo that's come over all snowy - enjoy it's winter wonderland feel to get in the mood for the big day.

The stunning setting of the Royal Palace in Oslo is usually dressed in snow as it takes centre stage at the start of King Harald's seasonal address at the end of the year.

The palace is almost 200 years old with work starting in 1824 and King Carl Johan laying the foundation stone the following year. King Oscar I began using it as an official residence in 1849 and since then it has been closely associated with the Crown of Norway.

King Harald and Queen Sonja live there and all the official business of the Crown is carried out within its classic cream walls. The Royal Palace in Oslo belongs to Norway and is at the disposal of its Head of State.

Earlier in 2016, covered again in snow, it was at the heart of the celebrations for Harald and Sonja's 25th anniversary as King and Queen of Norway.
