Royal response to Berlin

Royal houses across Europe have sent messages of sympathy and paid tribute following the attack in Berlin on Monday night which left twelve people dead at a Christmas market. The attack, at the Breitscheidplatz market, also left 49 people injured. Here are the tributes from Europe's royal houses.

King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands said, in his statement following the attack in Berlin, that '' at the foot of the Memorial Church, which reminds us of the values of peace and reconciliation, defenceless people were...the victim of an act of violence.'' The King of the Netherlands ended by saying 'Berlin is in our thoughts'.


King Philippe and Queen Mathilde expressed their condolences following the Berlin attack

Queen Mathilde of the Belgians joined a minute's silence at the start of her visit to the European Commission on Tuesday morning. The Belgian Royal Family sent condolences, releasing a statement on Twitter in which they said they were deeply shocked by the attack and said their thoughts were with the victims, their families and friends and the German people.


Queen Margrethe II of Denmark sent condolences, on Tuesday, to the President of Germany in both German and Danish. Margrethe said she was deeply concerned by the tragic attack in Berlin and asked President Gaucke and the German people to accept her 'heartfelt condolences'. Margrethe's statement finished ''my thoughts are with the victims. their relatives and friends''.

King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden said, in a statement on behalf of himself and his German born wife, Queen Silvia. The King of Sweden said that ''with sadness and dismay we have received notice of yet another atrocity in Europe.  Germany is a country with which Sweden has close ties and which the Queen and I recently visited. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families.'



The Spanish Royal Household issued a statement on Twitter saying that King Felipe had sent President Gauck assurances of Spanish solidarity with the German people following the attack.
