Diana's Dresses: the honeymoon tweed

The exhibition of clothes worn by Diana, Princess of Wales being held at Kensington Palace to mark the twentieth anniversary of her death features some of her most glittering gowns. But there are also some more workday pieces in there and perhaps the most emotive of those is the tweed suit Diana wore for a photocall while on honeymoon in 1981. It was the first sight of the new Princess of Wales in the Scottish retreat her husband's family loved so much and a moment of royal romance made more poignant by its sad end. Here's Diana's honeymoon tweed.

As Diana walked through the Balmoral countryside in this Bill Pashley skirt suit, the world got an image of a fairytale princess every bit as romantic as the one seen on her wedding day just weeks earlier. The photos still pack an emotional punch, Shy Di, leaning on her husband's shoulder, a couple sharing loving looks and chivalrous kisses. It was the perfect image of a perfect romance and it captured imaginations around the world.

The suit became iconic, a first glimpse of a queen in waiting doing what he House of Windsor likes to do best - enjoy the countryside. This was Diana absorbing her new role, adapting to her new life and looking blissfully happy as she went about it. We know now that the truth was somewhat different but this suit, just as much as the fairytale Emmanul wedding gown, helped to create the image of a perfect princess in the swirl of a never ending romance. It would become one of the most symbolic outfits Diana ever wore.
