The Royal 2017: the Sapphire Queen

Another year, another landmark for the Queen. The Royal 2017 saw Elizabeth II add two more major milestones to her already impressive list of regal records. More on the marriage that made history in the days to come but now it's time to look back on her 65th anniversary as monarch and the day she became the Sapphire Queen....

Elizabeth II is already the longest reigning monarch in British history but on February 6th 2017 she added a new chapter to that illustrious reign. For on that day her reign reached 65 years and counting. The Queen has ticked all the major jubilees off the list but this one was named her Sapphire celebration and Elizabeth II marked it in style. Buckingham Palace re-released the image of the Queen in the sapphires given to her by her father, King George VI, on the day itself. It was a poignant tribute.

For the anniversary of her accession is always spent quietly and privately at Sandringham where George VI passed away on February 6th 1952. The Queen never commemorates the start of her reign but instead mourns the loss of her father. The excitement that came with this landmark moment allowed another reflection on the stellar royal career of Elizabeth II but the star herself kept behind closed doors to remember what was lost. That humanity, as well as her sense of duty, is perhaps one more reason why so many were ready to mark this milestone and be glad of the Sapphire Queen who would dominate the Royal 2017.
