#RoyalVisitSweden: red carpets and snow

#RoyalVisitSweden is under way. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are already out and about in Stockholm as their trip gets going. It all got very busy very early on for William and Kate as they took to the ice, well a red carpet covered version of it, for a spot of sport at the start of their stint in Stockholm. Very snowy, very pretty and very William and Kate.

These two do love an activity or two on their overseas trips. Wherever they go, however long they stay there is always at least one moment where they try out a bit of local sport. Straight off the plane (well, they actually arrived last night), the royal pair hopped off to Vasaparken in Stockholm for a spot of bandy hockey.

In case you're wondering, it's a sport very similar to hockey that's played on ice. But isn't ice hockey. And there's a royal link, wait, you'll like it. Bandy hockey originated in Cambridgeshire over 200 years ago. Do you see what they did there?  It was played on the frozen fens on East Anglia and thanks to the British Embassy in Sweden we now know that the first organised match was played in 1875. A bandy league was set up in Sweden at the start of the 20th century and at the moment discussions are under way about making it an official sport at the Winter Olympics.

The couple had a go at shooting but spent most of their time chatting to players and watching demonstrations of the sport. Given that Kate is now 6 months pregnant, that seems eminently sensible. We got another Cambridge overseas tour staple though as husband and wife got rather competitive with one another and William got really very serious while Kate laughed at him. It wouldn't be a visit without it.

After that snowy start, there was time for a quick chat with some of the crowds that had turned up to see them before heading back to the hotel to glam up (dare I say it but I prefer Wiliam's bobble hat to Kate's). The next engagement will see the couple welcomed to the Royal Palace by King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia. #RoyalVisitSweden is warming up nicely.
