Kate and William's Gold Blue Peter Badges

They just about played it cool. Anyone who grew up in Britain in the 70s, 80s or 90s will know the thrill that 'Blue Peter badge' can bring with it. So William and Kate were right to look pretty pleased with themselves when they were awarded gold badges, the highest possible version of the award, on a visit to Blue Peter last week.

It's just been revealed that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were given the badges when they popped in to the Blue Peter studios in Salford during their visit to Manchester last week. They joined the gold club because of their work in the field of children's mental health. Presumably, Prince Harry's has been sent by the post (let's hope first class, the mail can be shocking at Christmas time).

The gold badge is rarely handed out and is given for ''great expertise in their chosen field'' and to people who are ''considered to be role models''. William and Kate were effusive in their thanks before adding that the work on mental health still had a long way to go.  During their visit, Kate and William got a chance to meet the team behind the iconic children's programme and also heard about Fan Club, the safe online space provided for young people on the programme's website.

As presenters Radzi Chinyanganya and Lindsey Russell were quick to remind them they haven't got unique bragging rights in the Royal Family. The Queen was presented with the same award in 2002 during her Golden Jubilee year. But that didn't seem to dull the excitement of grabbing a bit of glitter all of their own. Well, it is a Blue Peter badge, after all.

You can see the newest royal recruits to this exclusive club receive their badges during the show's Christmas special which will be on BBC One on December 14th 2017.
