The Royal 2017: Harry and Meghan's engagement

It was the most eagerly awaited royal news of the year and they kept us waiting until almost the very end. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced their engagement as the Royal 2017 came to an end and got us all very excited for the Royal 2018. Here's a look back at how Harry and Meghan began a whole new wave of royal wedding fever....

Spot on 10am on November 27th 2017, Clarence House tweeted that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were getting married. It was a very modern take on this very modern love story. The couple met in the middle of 2016 and their romance made global headlines when Harry issued an unprecedented statement asking people to leave his girlfriend alone. After that, every image on Meghan's Instagram was analysed while their fleeting public appearances together were pored over in detail. They made their first official public appearance together at the Invictus Games by which time an engagement seemed all but inevitable.

Just hours after the announcement, the couple posed for photos in the White Garden of Kensington Palace with the world getting its first glimpse of Meghan's yellow gold and diamond ring. In their engagement interview that night, Harry revealed the centre stone of the three diamond setting came from Botswana, where they had spent their first holiday together, and the other sparklers had once belonged to his mum, Diana. The couple carried out their first public engagements together four days later in Nottingham.

Official engagement portraits followed in December as royal wedding fever began to take hold and Meghan became the first fiancee of a senior royal to spend Christmas with the Queen at Sandringham. The wedding takes place on May 19th 2017 at St. George's Chapel, Windsor when it's expected that the couple will be made Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Roll on the Royal 2018.....
